The Big Apple has a lot to offer! The broadway shows are outstanding, the shopping is one of a kind, and the dining is as diverse as the city itself! Last week, my mother and I went to New York City and fell in love with the variety of food allergy friendly restaurants! Eating with Ease in the Big Apple has never been easier!

Feinstein’s 54 Below

Feinstein’s 54 Below is a supper club with an American menu featuring 3 cabaret shows per night. Delicious, safe food is served during broadway stars’ performances. In order to ensure a safe meal, I called ahead, spoke with the kitchen, informed my waiter of my food allergies, and used MyTealTicket.  Feinstein’s 54 Below has a wonderful allergy protocol, and the staff are well rehearsed on the necessary safety precautions. I ate the delicious farm raised amish chicken which they made in a separate pan!

Alice’s Tea Cup

Alice’s Tea Cup is an Alice in Wonderland themed restaurant that provides a magical experience for their guests, with no shortage of scones, tea sandwiches, hundreds of teas, and most importantly… fairy dust! The waitress continued to read labels, inform the kitchen about my allergies, and even google searched certain companies to see if their are products were made in a facility with tree nuts, fish, or shellfish. I had the hamburger, which was grilled on a stove away from fish, as well as peppermint tea and a buttermilk scone!

Max Brenner

Max Brenner is a chocolate themed restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and most importantly, dessert. Their diverse menu features dishes from pizza flatbreads to blueberry lemon waffles to salted caramel chocolate shakes. All the above items are safe for those with tree nut allergies. I know how challenging it is to eat desserts at restaurants, but Max Brenner makes it easy! They mark every item that contains nuts with an asterisk, and they prepare all the nut free items in a separate location.  Anyone love chocolate?  Guess what, you are in luck!  The chocolate at Max Brenner is also not processed in a facility with tree nuts! This was my favorite spot due to all the possibilities!

La Masseria

La Masseria is an authentic Italian restaurant that has a clear allergen protocol and very informed staff members. With my tree nut allergies, it is difficult to have the bread served at restaurants due to cross contamination. This was not a problem at La Masseria because the bread is cooked away from all tree nuts. Moreover, La Masseria was able to make accommodations to all meals that did not feature tree nuts, fish, or shellfish as the main item. I was able to have all the desserts (besides the almond cheesecake) and even tried Creme Brulee for the first time!

Ellen’s Stardust Diner

Ellen’s Stardust Diner is THE home of the world famous singing waitstaff and some of the best diner food in the country. The entertainment from future broadway stars is accompanied by a variety of safe options. I went to Ellen’s Stardust for the first time last year and fell in love with it. Last year, I had spaghetti while listening to Dear Evan Hanson songs and being showered with confetti at the end of “Sincerely, Me.” They prepared the spaghetti in a separate pan and this year, they prepared pancakes on a stove that was not used that day! The talented wait staff/performers are incredibly educated about food allergies and the necessary precautions that need to be taken!

New York City is the epicenter for energy! The list of activities and restaurants is endless. With food allergies, it is easy to feel limited by restaurant options. As more and more restaurants adopt safe dining protocols, the endless amount of restaurants will become available to everyone.

Food allergy awareness is the first step towards helping people have a safe and enjoyable dining experience.  Additionally, by using MyTealTicket, you are safe guarding your meal, while also raising awareness about food allergies.  I strongly recommend the 5 restaurants above as they welcomed me, MyTealTicket, and they made Eating with Ease a wonderful experience.
